How did the Dutch language deteriorate?

Dutch did not deteriorate. It simply failed to remain "Dutch", abstracted so far away from all things Dutch. Think of it as Afrikaans evolving, not Nederlands eroding. Also, consider it a cost of colonization. None of the colonist tongues remained "pure", and that's a good thing.
