Why would thousands of people believe a wacko who thought he knew the exact day the world will end?

Because people are always trying to find something to believe in, guess. But, I don't think they should put everything on the line for something that has a track record of not coming true. I mean out of the thousands of doomsday prophecies that have ever been proclaimed, which ones have ACTUALLY come true?
