Upset over the death of a bug?

I stepped on a spider that was in the office and someone seemed *very* upset that that I didn't pick it up and put it outside. I really didn't have the time to mess around with it and don't really see the point. Her reaction seems awfully phony to me. What do you think? Do you step on bugs or is that now immoral? Is this common now? Did you ever get chastised for stepping on a bug?
